Local artists and artisans throw Spring boutique-style show in time for Mother’s Day and Graduation.

LAWRENCE, KS—The Ladies of Lawrence Artwork (LOLA) cooperative is bringing you another
exciting boutique-style shopping event just in time to pick out one-of-a-kind gifts for Mother’s Day and graduation. This Saturday event will be held at Pachamama’s Restaurant at 7th and New Hampshire Streets on May 7th from 11am until 4pm and will feature 9 local artists and artisans with products ranging from jewelry, clothing, accessories, home items, stationary and fair trade items, many of which are constructed of recycled and natural materials in honor of Earth Day.

LOLA events feature the handiwork of Lawrence women and provide an intimate boutique-style
shopping experience where visitors can browse and interact with the artists and artisans themselves. LOLA shows are organized by the participants and hosted by generous Lawrence businesses that support local artists and crafters.

While this LOLA event will feature long-time LOLA favorites such as Early Jewelry, Little Bluestem Baby and Awava, this show will also feature some exciting fresh faces such as Kitty Reese, Feather Spring Arts and Mixed Media Clothing.

“I remember shopping at my first LOLA event! I was really impressed with the quality of each lady’s
work and felt so inspired. I am very grateful to be given this opportunity to participate and to be included in such an incredible group of women. I love the idea of connecting to the community at these small events and creating new pieces for each season. Sustainability: Large&Lasting

Faced with the task of writing about a "green" and “sustainable” lifestyle, I felt reluctant. The old rule of thumb, you know a trend is over when they are selling it on a T-shirt at Hot Topic. I'm not the only one who is slightly exhausted by the hype. But I was missing the bigger picture. I had inadvertently confused a trend (ecobricks, cardboard…) with a paradigm shift (sustainability). What a dork. Trends, by definition, suggest a lack of sustainability while societal change moves us forward.

According to Wikipedia, sustainability is “the capacity to endure.” At the other end of the spectrum of legitimate sources, the United Nations defines sustainability something that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." So…we’re all talking about the same thing. Now it’s just about how to live it (less talk more rock?).

While sustainable development, architecture, systems, etc make a large-scale impact on our planet, sustainability in our daily lives is often more salient for the individual. This has been true for me in my work with Feather Spring Arts.

Both pieces incorporate reclaimed and recycled materials

Crafting from leather and other materials that have been reclaimed, leftover, recycled or found adds a dimension to my creative experience that I would not have anticipated. This is rebirth and regeneration in the vein of micro-sustainability. We change our own attitudes and with it, become part of that cumulative revolutionary force that makes a large and lasting impact: a force with the capacity to endure.

Glitter and Rust Greetings is a line of cards created by Lawrence artist Kendra Marable. The cards are a media which combines her love of creating art, taking photos and writing letters. Through them, Marable hopes to inspire and increase the written dialogue between others.

Marable originally hails from Minnesota. After spending a few chapters of her life in Minneapolis and Portland, she landed in Lawrence over a decade ago. Here, she received her masters in fine arts from KU.

"Creating art is the result of participating and responding to my inner and outer worlds. It is a preservation of the lost and found. PHOTOBOOTH FUN AT LOLA GIANT!

The OH!SNAP! PHOTOBOOTH! is an affordable photobooth alternative that serves two functions: an excellent activity to keep guests active and entertained and a great way to get beautiful photos of all your favorite people. The booth is set-up with gorgeous lighting and backgrounds that makes everyone look amazing. While I don't yet have the capabilities to offer on-the-spot prints, I make up for it by offering the photos online to all of the guests for free download and affordable print purchases. The goal of the OH!SNAP! PHOTOBOOTH! is to make photobooths accessible to all, so that it can be set up at any party, not just the high budget ones! All I need is an outlet, two chairs, and a small corner, I've set the booth up even in closets and at the ends of hallways!

In addition to her famous photobooth, Ailecia Ruscin also offers many other photographic services. She takes a documentary approach to weddings and likes to be diligent in getting pics of as many guests as possible so that you will have photographs of all of your family and friends having fun at your wedding. She also does on-location portrait sessions, using available light and natural backgrounds to give the photos a more authentic and less posed feel. She regularly does portrait sessions with families, couples, and groups of friends--taking the group out to various locations to play and have fun while she captures portraits. Photoshoots with Ailecia feel like play, she's not one to push artificial smiles. Bands will appreciate the live shots she takes, especially in well-lit venues with colorful stage lighting. Kristen Kinsch began crafting sock monkeys in 2008, then branched out to other animals. From there, her handmade creations have turned into her company, Stitchees. Crafting each piece from found, purchased or reconfigured materials, Kinsch says that each piece is as unique as each individual.

"Give me a pair of your favorite socks or some socks that your child has outgrown," she said, "and I will make them into a keepsake softy friend."

Kinsch studied Body Work and Massage Therapy, receiving her degree in 2004. Perhaps inspired by the positive effects of touch, her soft handmade creatures are also a result of Kinsch's need to create and give.

"I have been into crafting since I was a kid," Kinsch said. "I made my first sock monkey as a gift and discovered how fun it was to give personality to an inanimate object."

Jane Leek began crafting in March 2010 after an apprenticeship in Tuscany with the Italian Leather Smith, Stefano Parrini. Her fledgling company, Leek's Leather, specializes in handmade leather bags, wallets, sandals, belts, pouches, necklaces, and custom-made items such as, leather bras and marsupial packs.

"Everything I make is designed, cut, assembled, and sewed by hand. The labor and attention I put into this work repays me in multiple ways," Leek said. "It allows me to be creative and to grow through that creativity, to engage in an ongoing dialogue between myself and the world."

Born and raised in Kansas, Leek is currently traveling the world, often landing back home in Lawrence, and gathering inspiration along the way.

"My motivation is to create," she said. "My inspirations come from everyday, every moment; from the 1947 photograph of my grandfather's clothing store, to a person I meet on the street, to the visions I receive through listening to music."

Quince to Marmalade is a vintage textile and original print design studio that sells vintage fabric for use and inspiration in apparel and home decor. The business is co-owned by Morris, who is based in Kansas and her long-time friend and business partner, Marjorie Cox, who is based out of New York. Morris' job is unearth vintage textiles, which includes a bit of travel. Cox, a textile designer by trade, designs original prints and shows their collections by appointment. In addition, Morris' husband, Jeromy, has played a large part in the execution of the brand and their online presence.

For LOLA GIANT Morris is showing under the name Q to M, a division of Quince to Marmalade. It is a different focus for Morris where she is able to utilize the leftovers from larger projects and create something new and useful.

"After I use what's needed for Quince to Marmalade I find myself stashing these fabric scraps. It's our by-product," Morris said. "In preparing for LOLA it's created a nice alternative to my day and it's been fun to see the form these fabrics take on."

This is Morris' first LOLA event. She has made items of varying size including: patterned bunting flags, fabric-covered light switch plates, upholstered furniture and an upholstered bed frame. In addition, there will be small bundles of fabric for sale.

"There's a great deal of variation in the patterns, [and] I find [them] very inspiring," Morris said. "One of the reasons I'm drawn to this is for the unique position of crossing paths with all kinds of antiques. And by close proximity I'm getting a real grasp on knowing the difference from what was massively produced versus what has a really special appeal. At first I found the experience dizzying. I would see chaos while my senses were overloaded with the familiar odor of dust/mold/mustiness. I've since been able to narrow my focus. And with this ability I can zone in on amazing fabrics, furniture and all kinds of random items. I love it!"

From Kansas to Amsterdam, Molly Murphy’s intricate paintings, graphite and pen and ink drawings, predominantly of the female form or aspects of it, dissect what it is to be a woman. Murphy often delves into the dark spaces which society often chooses to ignore while showing the beauty in everything.

“It is a thin line we walk between grotesque and delicate, and so often i go tumbling from one to the other that the notion of duality is not just natural, but necessary.”

“Kicked out of high school and sent out to negotiate a series of precarious twists and turns, drawing and painting served as both vehicle and passenger in my self-education. now, at the age of thirty-two, i serve on two not-for-profit boards for the arts in an effort to help bring the arts to others who need it. i paint every day for six to twelve hours and am still not sure if the drive to create is a gift or a burden, but I never doubt its value.”

In 2006, Good Dog! Biscuits & Treats was created as a job training program for homeless people living at the Lawrence Community Shelter. Employees earn a living wage, pay taxes, learn a trade, experience workplace problems and successes, participate in board meetings. In short, everyone is involved in all aspects of Good Dog! Staff and volunteers are proud to say that in the last four years 16 people have moved from homelessness to housing and jobs outside the homeless community.

LOLA GIANT Profiles: Early Jewelry, Kylie Grater

Kylie Earlene Grater of Early Jewelry draws upon her rural upbringing on the great plains of Kansas as meditations for her natural style and the utilization of materials such as feathers, bone, wood, and leather. Early Jewelry established itself in 2004 as an independently owned and operated design company that is committed to the use and/or reuse of natural, sustainable and recyclable materials; all of which are incorporated into classic, everyday wear and one of a kind jewelry items.

The simplicity of rural life, the changing of the weather, and the cycles of planting, and harvesting have all influenced Grater’s approach to creating jewelry. Her close contact with these organic influences, in part, determines her materials.

"My family farm is between Riley and Leonardville," Grater said. "I'm inspired by the Kansas skyline, the arial images of crop layouts, raw materials and rural nostalgia."

That nostalgia also relates to Grater's line, titled "p.m." that reconstructs new pieces using cast-outs and vintage jewelry. Inspiration for this line of jewelry comes from a dictate of her past: "one must make use of every little thing." This reuse results in unique and eclectic pieces.

Her belief of using every part of something was reinforced through Grater's hands on approach to education and training. Through she received some training at Goldmakers, Grater spent a substantial time studying and working abroad. For one year, through an exchange program, she studied the professional side of craft-making in England. Later, she spent six months in Africa, working with an HIV/AIDS project. These cultures, combined with her own upbringing helped determine the way Grater builds her designs. She started making and selling locally in 2003 and by 2004 she had established Early Jewelry.

"Growing up on a farm and [raised] by a single mom, the hard work ethic rubbed off on me," Grater said. "My motivation is growing my business, paying the bills, and being proud of my work."

Needing an outlet for her fledgling business and wanting to highlight the talent within Lawrence, Grater founded LOLA in 2004.

"I started LOLA with Tina Bell for the purpose of putting together a holiday show. We asked Kendra Marable and Kristen Farrell to also be involved and the rest is history," Grater said. "I have co-organized and exhibited in each and every LOLA show since."

"LOLA been a great way for me to show my work to the public," she said. "We have a very supportive community here in Lawrence and that support is the reason I have been able to grow Early Jewelry into my full time job. It's always a lot of work to organize the shows, but it's awesome the day of the event to see how excited the public is to buy our handmade goods. It helps give me the confidence to go out to larger markets and show my work."

That said, Grater has experienced the pros and cons of taking her business into the public.

"It's awesome when people tell you they are fans of your work and I am always surprised when someone knows my work or my company without being a friend or family member," Grater said. "But, I've taken some hits, too. After my first major trade show my screen-printed earring design was ripped off and manufactured in Asia. I guess it's a complement."

Specializing in baby items ranging from blankets to onesies, bibs to pillows, and more, little bluestem baby has been in business for eight years. As owner, Traci Furan, puts it, "we pretty much stick to soft goods."

Furan got her start very young. With an art teacher mother, she began with weaving, which led to painting, and then sewing. In between, she turned her appreciation of art into a formal education and graduated with a BFA in Art History and an MFA in Museum Studies in Collections Management.

Though she briefly transplanted to California, Furan says she is a Kansas girl, through and through. She grew up in Wichita and has been in Lawrence for the past seven years.

"[Moving back was the] best decision ever," Furan said. "No one understands how small their sky is in Cali or why. When going to the beach with friends, they would go for the water and I would go for the wind."

Between her education and appreciation of elements and nature, Furan finds her inspiration. Utilizing retro and vintage inspired fabrics, found objects and the things that trigger her own memories and nostalgia, she creates limited edition and one-of-a-kind pieces. She also lists "all things girly and pink, shiny stuff, growing root vegetables, bees, travel and insomnia" as inspiration or things that catch her eye.

"It is an offshoot from my time spent working with artists and in museums," Furan says, "I buy small quantities of fabric to keep selections fresh."

Working with children's items, Furan sometimes gets to see hopes, dreams and the circle of life play out before her.

"Fellow LOLA lady, Kendra Marable, received a gift wrapped in hot pink fabric with Day of the Dead sugar skulls. She gave it to me to use, but then recently she hoped for something made from this. Alas it [was] all gone! Then in a bag of goodies she received, she got the sugar skull bib she wanted after all. I like stories and items coming full circle," Furan said.

"I love feedback from moms about how the blankets I make are the ones their kids can’t leave the house without. I’ve also had many hope-to-be grandmas purchase products for grandkids not yet brought into the world," she said. "I love that. I think it’s flattering."

Furan has been participating in and organizing LOLA events since its inception in 2005.

"I can’t remember my life without LOLA," she said. "LOLA always brings such a fun group of people together: from the vendors, to the hosts of the spaces we use, to the community supporting us. It reinforces to me how much I love Lawrence."

If she wasn't doing this?

"I secretly fantasize about being an onion farmer," Furan said.

Layla McEniry has been running Sweetcakes in Lawrence, KS for the last few years after working in the restaurant/bakery industry off and on for 15 years.

Sweetcakes makes cakes, cupcakes and other tempting goodies for occasions of all kinds. You will never find over-the-top fondant covered cakes at Sweetcakes as Layla prefers using all-natural, local and organic ingredients in her delicious creations.

Layla was born in Oshkosh, WI and spent the first five years of her life touring state parks with her hippie parents in a yellow VW bus. They settled in Lawrence and Layla is proud to call herself a townie! She is married and raising a teenager daughter.

Food and baking have been a passion for Layla since she was a small child. She obsessively watched Julia Child on PBS and asked for a food processor for her 10th birthday. Layla also studied sculpture at KU's School of Fine Arts which she feels contributes to her love of making pretty things to eat. With her background in homestyle baking and European pastry, Layla loves to combine the two elements to make beautiful desserts that are still accessible to everyone.

Layla finds inspiration in ethnic cuisine and world culture and loves to combine unorthodox flavors to tempt the Midwestern palate. Some of her favorite flavor pairings for cupcakes include Indian spiced pumpkin and almond green tea. She also loves using older handed-down recipes. Layla collects both vintage aprons and cookbooks and loves her sky blue Kitchen-Aid mixer.

Recently, Sweetcakes stepped outside the realm of pretty treats and rose to the challenge of making a zombie-inspired wedding cake for a Halloween wedding. After creating an elegant tiered cake with ivory buttercream, Layla than had to drip "blood" down the sides and place marzipan zombie parts all over as she would fresh flowers.

Sweetcakes participated last year in LOLA Giant and this year for LOLA Valentine. Layla is honored and thrilled to be included again with such a diverse and talented group of women.

Sweetcakes thanks her family and friends who are always willing to be her tasters and guinea pigs. What a hard job it must be!

Designing and creating for five years, Rachel Dempsey, owner of RED designs jewelry, grew up in Leawood, Kansas and moved to Lawrence eight years ago to pursue her degree in Film from the University of Kansas.

Inspired by Native American aesthetics, Dempsey creates seed bead woven earrings, gemstone pieces which are intricately embellished with beads, and a variety of necklaces and pendants.

“My goal is to have a career in jewelry. I love the creative process starting from matching up colors to seeing someone pick out a design that is perfect for them,” Dempsey said.

RED Designs Jewelry was one of the amazing companies featured at last year’s LOLA GIANT Holiday Sale, and we are excited to have her back this year.

Originally from Topeka, Kansas, Kitty Reese moved to Lawrence ten years ago and acquired her BFA from the University of Kansas in 2004. Reese has been making art for 15 years and launched her business, Kitty Reese, in 2006. Reese does most of her creating out of her home in Lawrence and does her screen printing at Blue Collar Press, where she works.

“I illustrate whimsical animals and then print them on American Apparel and Alternative Apparel t-shirts,” Reese said.

Reese offers both children’s and adult apparel, tote bags, draw string bags, printed socks, cards and tea towels, to name a few.

“I am a happier person if I create. I am inspired by my three pet rabbits and my white Persian cat. I am always looking at what the neighborhood squirrels are doing and love animals of all kinds. I hope to have a mini horse and llamas someday,” Reese told us.

Born and raised outside of Fremont, Nebraska, Molly Crook moved to Lawrence to acquire her BA in Visual Communications (graphic design), and moved back to Lawrence, her “favorite little place on Earth”, after six years in Dallas, Texas, in 2004.

Crook’s company, New Flight, makes beautiful, one-of-a-kind garments for men, women and children, as well as accessories, out of recycled fabrics.

Crook hasn't put down the needle and thread since she was taught to sew at eight years old by an elderly neighbor. In 2007, Crook launched New Flight Apparel with the creativity and motivation inspired by her little girl.

"New Flight is inspired by life, the beauty in everyday things an all of the neat stuff there is to discover if you slow down enough to check it out. I find that I pull my designs from nature for the most part, e.g. flora, animals and all sorts of little creatures that fly, swim and scurry about. I also find inspiration in designs I find beautiful (sugar skulls, vintage tattoo art, etc.)," Crook said.

Working from her home studio in Lawrence, Emily Eakes crafts "hand-carved, hand-printed, hand-embroidered, signed and ready to hang original artworks for the 21st century woman." Subtle and subversive, Eakes' work combines traditional printmaking with images of stereotypical "women's work" to create thought-provoking home decor pieces.

"I'm inspired by culture and by the notion that what for some is bad and wrong, for others is good and normal," Eakes said. "I like making beautiful things that are subtly subversive."

Born in Missouri, but raised in Northeast Kansas, Eakes has called Lawrence home for the past several years. She earned her bachelor of fine arts degree from the Kansas City Art Institute and has taken additional credits in K-12 art education at Washburn University.

Making art for over 30 years, Eakes knows that the drive and need to create is within her.

"I knew by the first grade that I was going to be an artist," she said.

Raised in St. Louis, MO, Ann Dean has been taking photos since she was 15 years old. Although she has done wedding photography and photo illustration, Dean's focus is travel photography.

"It is important for me to visit new places and experience different cultures around the world, and to promote education and understanding between people through my photographs," Dean said. "With each shot I hope to capture a specific moment in time that resonates with the viewer as if you were actually there watching the scene unfold for yourself, thus providing the individual with a unique experience."

Motived by the beauty of everyday life, Dean believes that photography is a way of capturing the spirit of each day.

"I love photography because it gives me a chance to savor the fleeting moments in time that we all take for granted and that give our lives meaning."

After receiving a Bachelor of Arts in English at the University of Kansas, Dean went on to pursue a graduate certificate from the New York Institute of Photography and has studied under several different photographers in the Lawrence area. She is currently teaching photography at the Lawrence Arts Center and working as a freelance photographer.

LOLA GIANT Profiles: Butternutsquash, Larissa Wilson

Larissa Wilson is the owner and sole creator behind Butternutsquash, a jewelry and home decor business that specializes in items made from recycled materials and found objects.

"[My items] have a nostalgic and vintage feel," Wilson says, "but [they are made] for modern people."

A graduate of Fort Hays State University with a BFA in painting, Wilson has worked as an artist for 12 years. And, inspired by the raw materials around her started Butternutsquash three years ago.

"I like taking all the random … things I've collected and see how they fit together," Wilson said. "Recycling is a big part of what I do. Every piece I make is 50-100% recycled or repurposed materials, including packaging and displays. Most of the recycled content comes directly from the community where I live."

For Wilson, the work is sometimes just as exciting as the end result.

"I set up little puzzles for myself," she said. "What can I make out of an empty soda bottle, this needlepoint magazine from 1969, and old rusty wire? [I'm] sort of like MacGyver, only with art, not bombs ... and slightly less duct tape."

Wilson grew up in small towns all over Kansas, but her family calls Belleville home. Her ties to home and family play a part in her work and inspiration.

"My grandmother, a survivor of breast cancer and lung cancer, was an extraordinarily strong and resourceful woman. She never complained, never rested. She sewed, quilted, gardened, cooked, scrimped and saved every scrap of paper, string, and fabric... out of necessity, but also out of love for making things. She made a beautiful and comfortable life for her family, seemingly out of nothing," Wilson said. "I think of her every time I work in my studio, and every time I want to give up … and every time I make coffee. Her house always smelled like coffee."

Wilson has lived in Lawrence since 2003 and this is her second LOLA event, her first being 2009's LOLA GIANT.

"[LOLA] artists are not only talented, but kind, professional and fun," she said. "It [is] one of the least stressful and most smoothly run events I have ever participated in."

Roelofs is the creator of Feather Springs Arts, a fledgling business which incorporates stones, shells, leather and other natural elements into wearable art. She also offers two dimensional pieces through her illustrations, some of which are incredibly detailed studies of those same elements.

Roelofs has been making arts and crafts for as long as she can recall. Living under the mantra of "Life just keeps getting better and better," she currently finds inspiration through both the spiritual metaphors in flight and the metaphysical energies in stones.

Born and raised in Kansas City, Roelofs deems Lawrence—her home for eight years—as her true hometown. Here, she earned her bachelors degree in industrial design. She currently lives in Midtown KC where she is earning her master's in occupational therapy at KU Med.

While most would assume that her occupation and art are separate, Roelofs sees a clear link between them.

"I am interested in the way design can promote holistic well-being," Roelofs said, "specifically when adjusting to life after an injury or [when a] disability impacts our sense of identity and independence."

Awava Tailors get New Work Space in Gulu, Uganda!

Kate von Achen has been a part of LOLA since their second show in 2006, making bags and jewelry using recycled vinyl records found at yard sales and thrift stores around Lawrence, Kansas.

In 2007, Kate moved to Uganda to pursue her M.A. in Peace and Conflict Studies at Makerere University in Kampala, after visiting the country twice before and falling in love with the country more and more each time.

“My first trip to Uganda was in the summer of 2006 to work with fair trade coffee farmers in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. We were examining how fair trade practices actually work on the ground. It was amazing. When we were leaving all I could think of was how I would get back to Uganda. A few months later I applied for an academic program studying the conflict in northern Uganda alongside Ugandan university students and was accepted! I was off on a plane on January 1^st, 2007 to spend 3 weeks in Kampala and Gulu to see what the climate was like. This experience was also amazing. I visited Makerere University and spoke with some of the faculty in the Peace and Conflict Studies program, returned home, applied to the program and moved to Uganda in August 2007.” Kate said.

Putting all of her experiences together, from seeing how fair trade practices work on the ground to where gaps needed to be filled to redevelop the lives devastated by conflict in northern Uganda, Kate came up with the idea behind Awava.

Awava has been working with Auma Lucy, an amazing tailor who has worked out of the central market in Gulu Town for four years, since Awava’s inception. As Awava has grown, so have the number of tailors which Lucy has brought in to train and bring on board to work on Awava’s beautiful products. More people, more sewing machines and more sewing materials have squeezed the small market stall beyond capacity.

That factor, coupled with the planned destruction and re-building of the market prompted Lucy and Awava to look for a new work space. And they found one! While it is significantly more expensive than the market stall, the space is big and has electricity!

“Lucy has three machines that could be hooked to electricity but since there wasn’t any in the market stall, the machines were operated by a foot petal. The petal machines are still necessary due to frequent power outages in Gulu, but when the power is there, the work will be more efficient which is great! We bought the ladies a solar lighting system for the stall last Christmas but now the new shop will have better light and they can run a fan in the shop! It gets so hot in Gulu. I don’t know how they work sometimes. I just sit in the stall sweating and I’m not working like they are.” Kate told us.

Last week Awava helped the tailors move into the new space.

They will for a few months be operating out of the new space and the market stall. Due to the upcoming February elections, city officials have decided to push the demolition of the market to after the elections in hopes that they still get votes from the hundreds of people running their businesses out of the market. Lucy has decided to keep two tailors working from the old space in order to keep the local business they receive from the foot traffic in the market and use these months to spread the word about the new location.

“We will have more photos next month but we ordered a big 6X6 shelving unit, a large cutting table and wooden racks that attach to the wall to display the colorful kitenge (wax print) fabrics for sale. Those should be delivered and installed by the end of this week! In early November, we are going to have our official opening and Lucy’s priest will come to bless the shop. This is something Lucy and I have wanted for so long and it is beyond exciting to finally have it happen!” Kate excitedly told us.

Awava was enthusiastically welcomed into LOLA and has been participating since the beginning. Kate will be wo-manning the Awava table at this year’s LOLA Giant, with more products and more photos and stories about the new work space in Gulu so be sure not to miss her!

About the artists:

Leslie Kuluva is an artist and native Kansan who makes prints, drawings, paintings, sewings and knittings, among other projects. Her involvement in the Lawrence music scene has played heavily into her art over the years, and she currently works closely with many bands, artists and small businesses through made-to-order design and screen printing.

Jeff Eaton learned screen printing while working at a sign shop in the 1990s. Active in the Wichita music scene, he found a new artistic outlet in screen printing eye-popping concert posters, which enjoyed a popular resurgence at the time. After leaving the sign business to tour with the band Split Lip Rayfield, Jeff opened his own print shop, Pride of Gumbo, in Wichita in 2004; both he and the shop relocated to Lawrence in 2008.

Mixing homegrown development techniques with computer design and use of reclaimed or recycled substrates, Eaton and Kuluva launched The Test Kitchen in East Lawrence in January 2010. Their shop is open to the public.

Burke is a LOLA Giant participant who shows her work as Honeytree Gallery which she owns and curates. She currently resides in Kansas City and maintains strong ties to Lawrence where she received her BFA in Graphic Design at the University of Kansas.

New embroidery works by textile and graphic artist Kate E. Burke will be unveiled at the Honeytree Gallery on Saturday, October 16. The show, entitled The Heart of the Matter, is 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and will feature live music from Suzannah Johannes, Tangent Arc and Andrew Conner.

Burke shares her inspiration behind The Heart of the Matter:

“Earlier this year, I was feeling confused about my life’s direction. Everyone kept telling me to “follow my heart.” It really got me thinking about the heart and all the phrases that reference the heart. In each piece, I used a different phrase and translated it into a drawing, then embroidery. The scale of these pieces are much larger than I have ever worked. I wanted to challenge myself. I started out trying to use my sense of humor to translate these phrases, but then it turned into some deeper emotions.

“This summer I experienced some significant events and life changes. These pieces helped me cope and process my emotions through the repetitive nature of embroidery. Embroidery allows me to spend more time with each piece and I guess, ultimately, with myself. It’s definitely creative therapy. This series is the result of six months of focus and energy. They represent all my confusion and grief in a humorous way and really get to the Heart of the Matter.”

About the artist:

Kate E. Burke is a textile and graphic artist that explores themes of juxtaposition: the private with the public, individual with community, internal against the external. She captures fleeting emotions and thoughts into permanent reflections of daily life using drawing, watercolor, beads,sequins, fabric and embroidery. Burke has exhibited her embroidery on fabric pieces, fashion accessories and watercolors on paper in galleries within the Kansas City metro area. She has also participated in live events to showcase her fashion designs and accessories. Born in Arizona to an Air Force family, Burke spent her youth in England and Kansas. She received her BFA from the University of Kansas in Graphic Design, studying abroad in England and Italy. Burke resides in Kansas City, MO, where she is the owner and curator of the Honeytree Gallery.
